{"id":77,"date":"2010-01-24T09:34:51","date_gmt":"2010-01-24T09:34:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.smithmartinpartnership.co.uk\/changethinking\/?p=77"},"modified":"2010-01-24T11:53:10","modified_gmt":"2010-01-24T11:53:10","slug":"information-from-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.smithmartinpartnership.co.uk\/changethinking\/?p=77","title":{"rendered":"Information from government"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.smithmartinpartnership.co.uk\/changethinking\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/datapic.jpg?resize=237%2C198\" alt=\"datapic\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"10\" width=\"237\" height=\"198\" align=\"left\" \/> It is a great step forward to see the government&#8217;s new data portal <a id=\"aptureLink_RBy7uaEEeJ\" href=\"http:\/\/www.data.gov.uk\">data.gov.uk<\/a> finally go live.<\/p>\n<p>The site seeks to aggregate information and data from a variety of sources, that can be searched by category and keyword.<\/p>\n<p>There is a growing master list of datasets or you can search by common <a id=\"aptureLink_KDodP0uQNf\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tag%20%28metadata%29\">tags<\/a>, \u00a0just as you can a <a id=\"aptureLink_tdnOElnPVC\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blog\">weblog<\/a>, to find resources and subjects you are interested in.<\/p>\n<p>For example, <a title=\"Dataset link for data.gov.uk\" href=\"http:\/\/data.gov.uk\/data\/tag\/children\" target=\"_blank\">search for data on children<\/a>, of which there are currently 305 datasets available, then use the tags and subsets to look for <a title=\"Data set link to data.gov.uk\" href=\"http:\/\/data.gov.uk\/dataset\/average_class_sizes_2005_to_2007\" target=\"_blank\">average class sizes<\/a>. This reveals a wealth of published information from a variety existing sources.<\/p>\n<p>This example produced information from the school census published by the <a id=\"aptureLink_3SH5FjMWN0\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Office%20of%20National%20Statistics\">Office of National Statistics<\/a>. Not only class sizes, but a range of other analysis too.<\/p>\n<p>The number of children known to be eligible for free school meals for example, as a percentage of all registered children.<\/p>\n<p>2005  \u00a017%<\/p>\n<p>2006\u00a0  16.1%<\/p>\n<p>2007\u00a0  15.9%<\/p>\n<p>As a marker for an improving economy &#8211; this is perhaps not a great indicator, but as evidence of a continued need for school meals and persistent drive on nutrition information &#8211; it&#8217;s better.<\/p>\n<p>Looking for data to produce a report, or argue for a new service?
