New ways to search in 2017

We do a lot of desk research on the web, to find protocols we can recommend to clients, as well as looking for new material and content for the web sites we produce, for ourselves and others.

Using the big search engines is fine, but sometimes on a wet Wednesday in March, you long for the search sensation to be a bit livelier, a bit un-normative.

Here are some suggestions.

Answer the Public

Developed to deliver consumer insight in the ‘Age of Google’. We used our standard format testing keyword ‘trees’ and the search results looked like this.

You can choose a variety of approaches to your keyword or phrase. We bet the next time you are deliberating over some stats, or working on a bid, the Answer the Public might help refresh the text.

It really does offer insights and approaches to subjects which, although designed for marketing professionals, can help refresh a jaded search palette.

Using natural language processing, the search engine claims to identify relationships between documents and data that are ‘overlooked by conventional search engines‘.

Another secure, private search engine that offers a new insight into your chosen subject. No tracking, just search. Looks and sounds like Google, but with none of the lingering oversight, allegedly.

Worked quite quickly on our standard searches too.

Oscobo is a UK-based company founded by two guys who left their corporate jobs to work towards a belief they both shared – that personal data should remain just that, personal.

Disillusioned with the corporate world and that the private individual is paying for what seems to be “free” internet content, they felt it was time to turn the tables the other way round.

  • Digital Knowledge – how smart are you?

    Digital Knowledge – 6 year olds are as smart as 45 year old adults, with a peak for digital understanding at 14 – 15 years! (Ofcom findings).

    In a report published by Ofcom, an average 6 year old understands more about digital technology than a 45 year old.

    At 6- 7 years, the Digital Quotient is 98, at 10- 11 years, it is 104, and by 14 – 15 years it has risen to 110.

    In contrast,the older age groups of 45 – 49 years have a Digital Quotient of 96, and 50- 54 years have a Digital Quotient of 88.

    The slide downwards continues as age increases. The findings were taken from a sample of 80 children and 2000 adults, so the figures are a guide and not an indication that all in those age groups fall into the DK described.

    image3-4.jpgThe DQ was devised by Ofcom to gauge awareness and self confidence around electronic devices from tablets to smart watches, knowledge of superfast internet, 4G mobile phone networks and mobile apps.

    Confidence around devices , we see as being fundamental, along with the ability to explore the resources or devices, and to access a myriad of different methods and facilities with confidence.

    This is an area, where the adults definitely do not know best!

    It is also interesting that in the age groups of majority of decisions makers ( we suggest from 40 54 years) that the DQ is already on the decline. We know from experience that it is hard for officers to engage with a resource which they are not familiar with and where younger people have a greater understanding.

    Today’s 6 – 7 year olds have grown up with YouTube, Spotify, music streaming and accessing TV through downloads. How cool is that?

    Things which make us stand back and gaze in amazement are like bread and butter to children.

    Our partnership perspectives, as educationalists and IT developers mean we see the enormous potential ahead. Children who can teach themselves IT and given the opportunity are able to create Apps, and develop programming skills. Let alone all the intuitive learning that takes place through IT systems, and bypasses so much of traditional learning processes.

    It’s a brave, new world!

    We have recently re-energised our oldest brand, DolphinBookBox. Some 10 years or so ago this was the delivery mechanism on-line for our community library and book delivery service.

    What we have found recently is that, after over a decade of development, our Partnership ‘elevator pitch’ – what is it you do? – was getting longer and longer.

    To stop our meeting attendees glazing over, as if they would, we have recompiled the BookBox web site and converted it into a feature suite for our miscellany of Partnership projects and services.

    There is a logic to our Partnership offering, with inter-connected themes for all our work.

    Our print and design service keys into our community web service, our project management efforts around community buildings key into our skills in governance and policy advice.

    Our children’s book business delivery synergises with our international on-line contact project Books go Walkabout, which itself feeds projects into our publishing house activities for new eBooks and recharged back catalogue creation….and so on.

  • Technological Children’s Centres

    A high definition screen in reception at Hornsey RoadWe have recently enjoyed being commissioned by Hornsey Road Children’s Centre in Islington to supply and fit their new IT suite and display screens.

    The Team at Family Action were successful in raising funds to purchase from us a suite of new laptops, with an innovative mobile trolley to store and automatically charge them overnight, to add to the facilities in the training room and across the Centre.

    Our installation team, led by our Technical Manager Doug Hopkins, also installed a new Promethean display board – allowing tutors in the Centre not only to access the screen with their own laptops, but to join the network with learners and to use the integrated interactive Active Classroom/Inspire learning and teaching suite that we installed on the Centre system too.

    Doug also successfully installed a large, high definition screen in the Centre reception area, for which the creative team at Thirdsectorweb, using their design and graphics skills, now supply regularly updated DVD’s which play the Centre timetable and feature activities for all to see.

    We think display for Centre visitors, that is current, timely and visually pleasing is a really important way to engage and inform people. Our solution, to install a simple DVD player is very, very cost effective and means that staff and volunteers have no complex learning to undertake in order to make our system work.

    We use our economies of scale for graphics creation and DVD supply, which is complimentary for the Center with their installation, meaning there is no ongoing cost to the charity for our service. An important consideration in times of tight budgets.

    The professional team at Hornsey Road were great to work with on the project, running a very successful Centre with a comprehensive, inclusive and supportive range of activities to support their care of children in the catchment.

  • The web and education – how we think about information

    Michael Wesch of Kansas State University produces a continuous stream of films and concept refreshing ideas about information, education and the cultural power of the web.

    The short film below offers the viewer some interesting insights into the way the web has changed how we will think about education, schools and universities in the future.

    The Canadian media thinker Marshall McLuhan in the sixties saw that ‘…the school is the custodian of print culture’. Now, Wesch argues, the game has changed for institutions. People can read, wrie and publish their own reflections on the internet.

    The Wesch argument is based upon the insight that ‘…the public now lives and breathes in a much larger sphere of information and knowledge’. He argues that education’s interface with technology should allow individuals to pivot their life course decisions by “…5 degrees”, in a way to release potential that would have been unimaginable before the advent of WWW.

    The Wesch film also has a piercing shard of insight into the potential collapse of hierarchies. The abandonment of which schools and universities will probably find the hardest thing to achieve.

    Wikipedia, populated with volunteered knowledge, is larger than the Encyclopedia Britannica. The web means, for Tim Berners-Lee, that ‘…the link is enough’. With enough hyper links the bookshelf, the hierarchy of knowledge becomes less important.

    Not irrelevant, but in a way that allows the knowledge researcher to follow the nodes and synapses of a thought or idea – in a way which would be impossible in a traditional print library.

  • Memories are made of this…

    We really liked this site – MemoryNet .

    Devised in partnership with the community of Cullercoats in the North East of England and Tyne and Wear Museums, the site captures the oral histories of a number of residents.

    Their contributions focus on a variety of topics from childhood to local music, wartime and the workplace.

    We particularly liked the simple and clear layout and the variety of recordings available from each contributor.

    It started us thinking about projects for schools and other community based centres. Why not have a ‘memory’ site or oral history of your own, with contributions on themes of your choice from across the ages, genders and cultures that make up your locality.

    With digital technology available the contribution of young people might be a particularly strong focus – giving their contrasting view of an area or community that they don’t yet remember changing.

    It would be a great way to focus your community’s engagement with your setting or Centre.
